The National Honor & Merit Scholars Society is an academic honors society dedicated to recognizing, rewarding, and honoring students from all academic disciplines. All of the constituent members have shown a responsible, sincere and zealous endeavor in both their academic and their recreational life.


The Honor Society symbolizes the endless pursuit of knowledge and civil service. In order to cultivate a high order of personal living, high value is placed on scholarship, leadership, integrity, creativity, and respect. The National Honor & Merit Scholars Society’s guiding principle is to honor over-achieving students who possess a strong sense of individual growth, not only through academics but engaged civic responsibility as well.

The Society is an academic honors society dedicated to recognizing, rewarding, and honoring students from all academic disciplines. All of the constituent members have shown a responsible, sincere and zealous endeavor in both their academic and their recreational life.

FAQ National Honor & Merit Scholars







Q. Do I have to pay annual membership dues?


A. No, there are no annual dues for membership in the Society. There is a lifetime membership fee that is paid upon induction into the Society. There is no obligation to join the Society once accepted.




Q. Is there a fee to apply?


A. No, there is no fee to apply for membership. The only fee associated with the Society is the membership fee that is paid if you choose to join the Society.




Q. When will I find out if I was accepted for membership?


A. Applications are evaluated within 3 days of their submission. Once evaluated, you will be notified of your acceptance within 2 weeks.




Q. I’ve been accepted for membership, when will I receive my certificate?


A. Once your membership fee is paid, you will receive notice of payment, and we will begin processing your information. Membership processing and certificate printing usually takes around 1 month.




Q. My address or other information has changed, what should I do?


A. If any of your information has changed, such as your address or phone number, please submit the member update form.




Q. When will I find out if I was granted a scholarship?


A. Applicants are reviewed for scholarships upon acceptance into the Society. Each member will be considered for a scholarship every time their file is updated. Files may be updated every year but are not mandatory for maintaining membership in the Society.




Q. How do I update my file so I can be evaluated for scholarships?


A. To update your file you must submit the membership update form.




Q. What are scholarships based upon?


A. Evaluation is based upon numerous factors, including: academic honors and recognition, current GPA, civil service, leadership experiences and any accomplishments pertinent to the Society.




Q. If I am a graduate student, am I also evaluated for scholarships?


A. Scholarships are granted to undergraduate and graduate students alike and will be awarded at the beginning of each calendar year.




Q. Who is eligible for membership?


A. The membership of The National Honor & Merit Scholars Society shall be open to men and women who are attending institutions of higher education in the United States of America. Undergraduate, graduate, professional, full-time and part-time students, are all eligible for membership as long as they possess the appropriate qualities that the Society strives to uphold. Foreign students are also eligible as long as they are attending schools within the United States of America.




Q. What happens if my cumulative GPA drops after I join?


A. Once a member of the Society, your membership cannot be withdrawn for any reason.




Q. What are the benefits of joining the Society?


A. The National Honor & Merit Scholars Society offers many benefits that can assist members throughout their academic and professional lives including; academic recognition, career assistance, scholarships and resume building.




Q. What fields of study does the Society cover?


A. The Society is an academic honors society that honors students from all academic disciplines.




Q. Is the Society a democratic society?


A. The Society utilizes the Bylaws in every action taken. Amendments to the Bylaws can be made.

Bylaws National Honor & Merit Scholars







ARTICLE I


Name


The name of the society shall be The National Honor & Merit Scholars Society.




ARTICLE II


Purpose


The purpose of the Society shall be to recognize, promote honor, and inspire academic excellence in all fields of higher education, as well as to develop an appreciation for scholarship and scholarly endeavors in others.




ARTICLE III


Membership


Section 1: Members: Membership shall be open to men and women who are attending institutions of higher education in the United States of America. Undergraduate, graduate, professional, full-time and part-time students, are all eligible for membership as long as they possess the appropriate qualities that the Society strives to uphold.


Section 2: Requirements: All members of the Society possess the same thirst for success in all of their scholarly endeavors. This intellectual pursuit is exactly what the Society looks for when reviewing each application. Since testing procedures vary greatly across the country, academic achievement is not the sole factor upon which eligibility is decided. Applicants shall:


Exemplify good character and honest morals


Be ranked within the top 15% of the institutions student body


Exhibit potential for leadership and service


Possess a strong sense of individual growth


Be involved in campus and community activities


Section 3: Alumni Members: A graduate member who was inducted into the society as an undergraduate.


Section 4: Honorary Members: The Society may elect an honorary membership for student who has shown a genuine interest or aptitude in scholarship and whose membership shall be considered to be in the interest of the Society.


Section 5: Transfer Students: A transfer student must have attended the new institution for at least one semester.


Section 6: Foreign Students: Foreign students shall be eligible as long as they have attended schools within the United States of America.


Section 7: Discrimination: The Society strictly prohibits any sort of discrimination.


Section 8: Permanence of Membership: Once accepted into the society, the inductee is a lifetime member....




ARTICLE IV


National Officers


Section 1: National Officers: The officers of the Society shall include the President, Vice-President and Executive Treasurer. The term of each office shall be limited to eight years, and officers may be eligible to succeed themselves for only eight additional years. Officers shall serve until their successors are elected and installed. 


Section 2: Duties of Officers: 


1- The President shall: 


a- Be the chief executive officer of the Society;


b- Be a member of the national executive committee;


c- Preside at all regular meetings;


d- Appoint necessary committees for the operations of business;


e- Supervise general operations of the Society.


2- The Vice-President shall:


a- Act in the absence of the President;


b- Be a member of the national executive committee;


c- Assist the President as directed to perform the business of the Society.


3- The Executive Treasurer shall:


a- Maintain minutes of the Society and the national executive committee;


b- Be a member of the national executive committee;


c- Keep a record of all members and shall issue membership certificates;


d- Be custodian of all funds of the Society, and pay all bills as approved by the President;


e- Perform and assist in any and all duties as mandated by the President.




ARTICLE V


National Executive Committee


Section 1: The Committee shall consist of the President, Vice-President, Executive Treasurer, the Immediate Past President and two elected members.


Section 2: The Committee shall meet annually and at any other time deemed necessary to conduct business of the Society.


Section 3: The Committee shall have the power to amend and interpret the Bylaws.


Section 4: The Committee shall perform such other duties in keeping with the provisions of the Bylaws as the Society or the President may mandate.


Section 5: The Committee shall elect the Executive Treasurer for the term of two bienniums and provide adequate secretarial assistance.


Section 6: The Committee shall perform any functions which fall within the scope of its activities which are not specifically delegated to any officer.


Section 7: The Committee shall secure adequate space, and provide necessary equipment for conducting the duties of office.




ARTICLE VI


Fees


Section 1: The induction fee for each new member shall be fixed by the Executive Treasurer.


Section 2: The only fee due to the Society shall be the one lifetime membership fee.






ARTICLE VII


Amendments


Section 1: Adoption: Bylaws may be proposed to the National Executive Committee. Bylaws must be passed by a majority vote of the National Officers. Once passed, amendments will be reviewed by the National Executive Committee.


Section 2: Suspension: Bylaws may be suspended by a majority vote by both the National Officers and the National Executive Committee.






ARTICLE VIII


Finances


Section 1: Depository: The funds of the Society shall be deposited by the Executive Treasurer in the name of the Society in a bank which is a member of FDIC.


Section 2: Records: The Executive Treasurer shall maintain and keep all financial records pertinent to the Society.


Section 3: Bill Payment: The Executive Treasurer shall be responsible for the payment of all bills of the Society and any other bills as mandated by the President.


Section 4: Dues: The fees for membership to the Society shall be decided by the Executive Treasurer.


Section 5: Special Assessments: Special assessments may be levied by a majority vote of the National Executive Committee.


Section 6: Budget: The National Executive Committee shall approve the budget as prepared by the Executive Treasurer.

When your application is submitted, it will be evaluated by the selection committee comprised of Senior Officers. Once it is reviewed, you will be notified of the decision within two weeks.


There are no application fees and we welcome every student to apply. If you are accepted, there is no obligation to join and all disclosed information will remain private. If you choose to join the Society, your application will automatically be reviewed for our available scholarships. Separate applications for scholarships are not required and you will be notified of your scholarship status upon induction into the Society.

Scholarships



SCHOLARSHIPS AT THE NATIONAL HONOR & MERIT SCHOLARS SOCIETY



The National Honor & Merit Scholars Society believes in rewarding its members for their academic, service and leadership excellence. To do so, scholarships are granted to qualified achievers who have demonstrated a high commitment to the standards set by the Society's constituents. 


Upon being accepted into The National Honor & Merit Scholars Society , applicants are reviewed for scholarship eligibility. A selection committee comprised of Senior Officers carefully evaluates each application. Evaluation is based upon numerous factors, including: academic honors and recognition, current GPA, civil service, leadership experiences and any accomplishments pertinent to the Society. 


All scholarships are funded by membership fees and are only available to current members of The National Honor & Merit Scholars Society. The total number and amount of scholarships are based upon the funds available to the Society at the end of each fiscal year. Each member of The National Honor & Merit Scholars Society will be considered for a scholarship every time their file is updated. Files may be updated each year by completing the Member Update Form, but are not mandatory for maintaining membership in the Society. Scholarships are granted to high school, undergraduate and graduate students alike and will be awarded at the beginning of each calendar year.
